The Virginia Health Care Foundation hosts two major events each year, Legislative Day and Heroes in Health Care.
Heroes in Health Care:
A Bridge During Troubled Times
VHCF's annual Heroes in Health Care event recognizes individuals and organizations who have made extraordinary efforts to help Virginia’s uninsured receive the care they need. Awards distributed at the ceremony include the Unsung Hero Awards, the You “Rx”ceptional Award, the Wachovia Wells Fargo Achievement Award and the NETworthy Award. VHCF's public and private sector partners also are recognized.
Heroes in Health Care is made possible through the generosity of its sponsors. The 2010 platinum event sponsor was Merck & Company. Silver sponsors included Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Eli Lilly & Company, GlaxoSmithKline, the Medical Society of Virginia, Pfizer Inc. and PhRMA. Award sponsors included the Virginia Association of Health Plans and The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation.
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was the featured speaker at the May 26, 2010 awards. Read more about Heroes in Health Care 2010.
Unsung Hero Awards:
Unsung Heroes are role models who have provided excellent service, commitment and dedication to one of the Virginia Health Care Foundation's currently funded projects as well as projects that have successfully graduated from VHCF funding. Projects nominate outstanding individuals or teams; the winners are chosen by a prestigious panel of judges.
Awardees in each of the following categories receive both recognition at the Heroes in Health Care event as well as a $2,000 check to their project, courtesy of the Virginia Association of Health Plans.

You “Rx”ceptional Award:
This award recognizes a Patient Assistance Coordinator or Medication Assistance Caseworker who has shown exceptional commitment providing prescription assistance to uninsured Virginians by using VHCF's The Pharmacy Connection (TPC) software. In addition to recognizing individuals for their contributions, pharmaceutical companies who have contributed greatly to improving access to prescription medications via TPC also have been recognized with a You "Rx"Ceptional award.
The Wachovia Wells Fargo Achievement Award
This award is presented annually to a former VHCF grantee that has demonstrated remarkable success in sustaining itself and continuing to provide primary health care to uninsured and underserved Virginians after its “graduation” from VHCF funding. In previous years, the organization winning this award has received $10,000 made possible by The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation.
NETworthy Award:
This award recognizes extraordinary efforts to build and strengthen Virginia's health safety net.
Partner Awards
Recognition is given at the event to VHCF's many public and private sector partners, without whom the Foundation's work could not continue.
Health Safety Net Legislative Day
In January 2010, VHCF, the Virginia Association of Free Clinics and the Virginia Community Healthcare Association convened at the Capitol for Health Safety Net Legislative Day 2010 -- the most successful legislative day ever.
Delegates, Senators and key staff were updated on the skyrocketing demand for health safety net services, the astounding 25:1 return on the state's investment in the health safety net, and the importance of sparing safety net services from further cuts.
