Unsung Heroes

Unsung Heroes are dedicated volunteers, gracious donors, exceptional physicians, extraordinary teams and remarkable employees -- all committed to providing primary health care to uninsured Virginians and those in medically underserved areas. These Unsung Heroes are role models who have provided excellent service, commitment and dedication to an organization that has received a Virginia Health Care Foundation grant.

Each year, current and past VHCF grantees nominate Unsung Heroes in one of five categories: Volunteer, Donor, Physician, Team and Employee.  A Child Health Champion also is recognized as an Unsung Hero.  The Unsung Heroes' organizations win as well, receiving a $2,000 check from the Virginia Association of Health Plans.

The Unsung Heroes are honored at the annual VHCF Heroes in Health Care event.  Other awards bestowed at the event include:  the Wachovia Wells Fargo Achievement Award, the You "Rx"ceptional Award, the NETworthy Award, and the Charles L. Reed Memorial Award.

Do you know an Unsung Hero who deserves recognition?  We invite you to nominate someone from one of the following categories (volunteer, donor, physician, teamwork or employee) who has made a real difference in your organization.  An independent panel of judges reviews all nominations and select a winner in each category.  For more information on nominating a Hero for a future award, contact VHCF.
