Many local and national foundations fund health care-related projects.  Other public and private entities also periodically issue requests for proposals (RFPs) which may be of interest to VHCF grantees. Virginia Medical Interpreter Training Grants Program

Deadline: Open

The Virginia Medical Interpreter Training Grants Program was established to build capacity statewide to deliver linguistically appropriate healthcare services and communicate with limited English proficient (LEP) individuals in the event of a public health emergency. Funds are being made available to pay for the cost of tuition to a limited number of bilingual individuals each year who wish to be trained as medical interpreters through an authorized Virginia course provider.

Universal Services Administration Corporation

Deadline: Open

The Rural Health Care program provides funding to eligible health care providers for telecommunications services, including broadband, necessary for the provision of health care. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of health care available to patients in rural communities by ensuring that eligible health care providers have access to affordable telecommunications services. The program provides discounts on the purchase of telecommunications services by eligible rural health care providers. Paid for by the Universal Service Fund, these discounts result in rates for service that are nearly the same as those in urban areas, where telecommunications rates typically are lower. Funding is capped at $400 million annually.

United Healthcare

Deadline: Open

The United Healthcare Children's Foundation (UHCCF) started a new program to help children who need critical healthcare treatment, services, or equipment that is either not covered or not fully covered by their parents' health benefit plans. The UHCCF provides grants to families to help pay for child healthcare services such as speech, physical, or occupational therapy sessions, prescription medicines and medical equipment such as wheel chairs, orthotics and eyeglasses. Parents and legal guardians may apply for grants of up to $5,000 each for child medical services and equipment by completing an online application at the UHCCF web site.

The Rescue Mission

The Rescue Mission has provided shelter to Roanoke’s homeless for more than 60 years. With the assistance of VHCF and others, it now provides primary health care services as well.

In response to the growing number of uninsured homeless individuals and families in need of health and mental health care, The Rescue Mission Health Care Center was opened in 2002. Before the center opened, over 60% of its clients used local emergency rooms for their health care. Not only did this generate an uncollectable bill for services, but homeless clients were unable to obtain needed prescriptions, transportation, or follow-up care.
