2004 Olde Towne Medical Center
Olde Towne Medical Center, a unique public/private partnership which serves the uninsured in the Williamsburg area. This clinic has grown by leaps and bounds in the past ten years. It has expanded from serving only pregnant women and children to providing care to people of all ages with a wide variety of health care needs.
Since the clinic’s opening in 1993, the number of patients seen each month has jumped from 250 to 850.
A medication assistance program has been established for the clinic’s patients. Last year, it filled $630,000 worth of prescriptions for 1,760 patients
In addition, Olde Towne has added a “Family Van” which travels to outlying areas with no public transportation. Last year it provided more than 1,800 visits.
Olde Towne’s dental program which opened in 1997 with a VHCF grant, now sees an average of 150 patients a month with the help of fifteen volunteer dentists. Its success has attracted over $150,000 in grant support since Olde Towne graduated from VHCF.
Olde Towne’s growth and success are the result of dedicated volunteers and staff and substantial support from all parts of the community.
Last year it raised over $75,000 from first time donors to the clinic. In addition, it has an ever-increasing endowment fund, and over one third of Olde Towne’s funding comes from local governments.
A recent study by the William and Mary Center for Public Policy Research found that, in the decade it has been in operation, “Olde Towne Medial Center has become an established, important, and effective mechanism for meeting a large and real community need”
