2005 Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Inc.
Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems (SVCHS) has grown by leaps and bounds since graduating from VHCF funding. In 1999, SVCHS had only one clinic (Saltville Medical Center) with two providers treating 3,300 patients a year.
With a grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation to help with renovation and expansion, the center took off and it hasn't stopped since!
Today, the Saltville Medical Center has morphed into Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems. SVCHS has three sites in various parts of Southwest Virginia with more than 11 medical providers. In 2004, SVCHS provided 31,991 patient visits to 8,793 patients. And, the folks at SVCHS aren't done yet. They will soon be adding a fourth site in Tazewell.
Increased volume isn't the whole story. This VHCF Alumna has expanded services, too. It has purchased a van to transport patients, who have no other way to get to get to their appointments.
It has hired mental health counselors to help local residents cope with various problems. It has a new migrant outreach program. And, it coordinates the region's Medication Assistance Program, which generated $6.1 million in free medicines for over 2,500 area patients last year.
