Unsung Heroes are dedicated volunteers, gracious donors, exceptional physicians, extraordinary teams and remarkable employees -- all committed to providing primary health care to uninsured Virginians and those in medically underserved areas. These Unsung Heroes are role models who have provided excellent service, commitment and dedication to an organization that has received a Virginia Health Care Foundation grant.
Each year, projects that have received VHCF grants nominate their Unsung Heroes, those unique individuals whose talents and energy make such a big difference. A distinguished panel of judges selects a winner from each of five categories (Volunteer, Donor, Physician, Team and Employee). The Unsung Heroes are honored at VHCF's annual Heroes in Health Care event.
Each winner receives both a statuette and a $2,000 check to the affiliated VHCF grantee -- funding made possible by the Virginia Association of Health Plans.
Unsung Hero nominations typically are due before the end of January each year. Details on the January 2009 deadline will be posted in late 2008.
We invite you to nominate someone from one of the following categories (volunteer, donor, physician, teamwork or employee) who has made a real difference in your organization. An independent panel of judges will review all nominations and select a winner in each category.

In addition to the Unsung Hero awards, the Wachovia Award for Outstanding VHCF Alumna is presented annually to a former VHCF project that has demonstrated remarkable success in sustaining itself and continuing to provide primary health care to uninsured and underserved Virginians after its "graduation" from VHCF funding.
