Ray Deyerle
The Rescue Mission Health Center
"Occasionally, someone steps into our lives and reminds us what the definition of compassion, dedication, faith and love is. Ray is such a person."
When Ray Deyerle retired from the railroad in 2002, he was looking for something to do with his new-found time. He contacted The Rescue Mission and agreed to volunteer a few hours a week driving patients to medical appointments.
That didn't last long. Since October of 2002, Ray has volunteered 40-60 hours each week!
He revamped the clinic's volunteer scheduling process, streamlined the way pharmaceuticals are managed, and improved statistical record-keeping. Ray also manages the clinic schedule, medical charts, clinic materials and clinic maintenance. In addition, he transports patients, answers phones, and registers patients.
Staff and fellow volunteers often observe Ray visiting sick patients in the hospital; dropping in on patients who have recently obtained housing with food, furniture, and clothing; taking patients to special events or to visit their families; and cheering up staff and patients who need a smile or helping hand.
