Virginia Dental Health Foundation
Missions of Mercy Project
Through its nonprofit Dental Health Foundation, the Virginia Dental Association oversees the nationally recognized Missions of Mercy (MOM) Project. This project recruits hundreds of volunteer dentists to spend a long weekend delivering restorative and emergency dental treatment to uninsured patients of all ages who reside in Virginia’s dental health professional shortage areas.
The success of these projects is dependent upon a core group of 13 people who carefully see through the countless details involved in planning and coordination. Without the various resources and backgrounds of each of the MOM team members, the MOM project would not be possible.
Thanks to the efforts of these 13 volunteers, six MOM projects have occurred in the past 30 months, providing 4,579 uninsured Virginians with greatly needed dental care. The value of professional dental services donated through the MOM projects totals $1.5 million.
