To help address the growing need for prescription medications, Virginia's Governor and General Assembly have appropriated funds to VHCF to create and expand local Medication Assistance Programs (MAPs) throughout the Commonwealth.

Through this initiative, RxRelief Virginia, local MAPs help qualifying, uninsured individuals who have chronic illnesses obtain free brand name prescription medicines using VHCF's The Pharmacy Connection software.  Since RxRelief Virginia was established, nearly 28,000 eligible patients have received a total of $124 million worth of prescription medications to help them cope with and control their chronic diseases.  In addition, the Greater Williamsburg MAP, funded by the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation and administered by VHCF, provides medication access to eligible individuals at seven locations.

RxRelief Virginia grantees are providing medication assistance to Virginians in localities statewide.  Many other locations across Virginia operate medication assistance programs using VHCF's The Pharmacy Connection software.  Contact your local free clinic, community health center, or other health care provider to determine if it participates.

Funding for MAP grants has been targeted to some of Virginia's most economically disadvantaged regions.  Grants for new RxRelief Virginia projects are issued in response to periodic requests for proposal. No new grants are being made at this time.
