Drug Discount Cards and Programs
For uninsured Virginians and those whose health insurance doesn't cover prescription medications, drug discount cards and programs may be able to offer some cost relief. Before enrolling, however, it's important to:
- Carefully review what, if any, fees you will have to pay to enroll;
- Check to see if the program covers the medicines you need;
- Discover if the program covers mail-order prescriptions only or if there is a nearby participating pharmacy; and
- Determine if the potential savings would offset the fees/costs involved.
Because many of the drug discount cards and programs cover name brand medicines only, it may be wise to compare costs of the generic equivalent against the discounted brand name medication (if you and your physician determine that the generic is an acceptable alternative.)
In addition, you may want to look into the discount generic prescriptions being offered by pharmacies at retailers such as WalMart, Kroger, or Target and members-only retailers such as BJ's, Sam's Club and Costco.
Finally, if you have a chronic illness, meet eligibility requirements, and live in an area of Virginia served by a Medication Assistance Program, you may be able to receive free prescription medications through RxRelief Virginia. For more information and a list of participating sites statewide, visit VHCF's RxRelief Virginia website.
