Charlottesville Free Clinic
In addition to "bricks and mortar" funding to help launch the Charlottesville Free Clinic in the mid 1990s, VHCF has supported a variety of other CFC initiatives. Among these grants were funding for a dental clinic for uninsured Charlottesville area adults, funding to help defray the costs of diagnostic services, including mammograms and lab tests, and the addition of a nurse practitioner to enable the clinic to serve additional patients and provide greater continuity of care for the chronically ill.

Chesapeake Care Free Clinic
Through a RxRelief Virginia grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation, Chesapeake Care Free Clinic employed a Medication Assistance Caseworker (MAC) to assist eligible individuals with accessing medicines from pharmaceutical companies’ patient assistance programs at little to no cost via VHCF’s Pharmacy Connection software. In addition, the free clinic received a VHCF grant to underwrite the salary and benefits of a full time IT Specialist to manage the clinic’s numerous electronic database systems. By dedicating a full time staff person to its IT operations, the clinic will be able to ensure that technology is used to its full potential by volunteers and staff.

Children's Hospital
Funding from VHCF enabled Children's Hospital of Richmond to hire a second full-time dentist, allowing it to treat more patients, especially older children and adolescents, including Richmond area children with FAMIS and FAMIS Plus health insurance.

Clinch River Health Services
VHCF funding for the expansion of the area Community Health Center, consolidating local agencies and offering 'one-stop shopping' for health care services. A second VHCF grant allowed Clinch River Health Services to add a third physician and greatly expand the center's patient capacity.

A 1995 grant from VHCF helped the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke begin the Commonwealth's first physician's assistant school.

Colonial Behavioral Health
Through its mental health initiative, A New Lease on Life, VHCF is helping Colonial Behavioral Health increase access to behavioral health services for uninsured individuals in James City and York Counties, Poquoson and Williamsburg. The grant provides basic mental health services and prescription medications for Lackey Free Clinic and Olde towne Medical Center patients, with a focus on individuals with chronic illnesses.

Consortium for Infant and Child Health
The Consortium for Infant and Child Health (CINCH) received Project Connect funding to enroll 650 children and re-enroll 25 children in FAMIS and FAMIS Plus. CINCH targeted Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach for outreach and direct application assistance, working primarily with the schools to identify uninsured children. CINCH also identified enrollment barriers, recommended alternative approaches, and tested solutions on improving outreach, simplification, and coordination efforts statewide.
