Looking for Help?

The Virginia Health Care Foundation is dedicated to helping

uninsured and underserved Virginians get the primary

medical care, dental services, mental health care,

children's health insurance and prescription medications

they need.

For Children:

Virginia's FAMIS programs help children receive insurance to cover medical, dental and vision care until their parents are able to re-enter the workforce. Eligibility is based on a family's current monthly income (a family of four earning $3,675/month might qualify). Learn about free or low cost children's health insurance.  It's easy to enroll.

For Adults:

Medical Care for uninsured, low income Virginians may be available through Free Clinics, Community Health Centers and other community providers, such as some Virginia Health Department locations.  For those requiring hospital care, Virginia Hospitals have financial assistance policies to assist low-income patients.  See Looking for Medical Care?

Dental care for adults is available through some free clinics and community health centers and through

periodic Missions of Mercy -- mass dental clinics held in locations statewide.  See Looking for Dental Care?

Prescription Medicines for people with chronic (long-term) diseases may be available at low or no cost to

uninsured Virginians through community health centers, free clinics, RxRelief Virginia and other medication assistance programs. There also are a growing number of drug discount cards and programs

Mental Health resources are available through Virginia's Community Services Boards and other outlets.

Finding Insurance

For the Newly Unemployed:

-  Details on COBRA Continuation Coverage Assistance under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is available through the U.S. Department of Labor.

Getting Covered: Finding Health Insurance When You Lose Your Job, helps people who've lost their health coverage sort through options for new coverage.

For Anyone:    See which public, private and community programs meet your needs through a great interactive website, HealthCare.gov.  Another helpful site, the Guide to Finding Health Insurance in Virginia from CoverTheUninsured.org, details health coverage options for uninsured Virginians.

For Expectant Mothers: FAMIS MOMS provides health insurance for low income, uninsured pregnant women.

Other Programs for the Uninsured

Patient Advocate Foundation’s Virginia Cares Uninsured Program can assist uninsured Virginians who have been diagnosed with chronic, debilitating, or life-threatening disease and are experiencing access to health care issues.

Virginia's Department of Medical Assistance Services administers the Virginia Medicaid program and

provides information about other programs for uninsured Virginians, as well as those with disabilities, long-term illnesses and the elderly (see the Commonwealth of Virginia Roadmap to Services).  For a quick summary of Virginia Medicaid, review Medicaid at a Glance.  To learn more and see if you are eligible, visit the Virginia Department of Social Services Medicaid website.

A growing number of other community providers are available to help uninsured Virginians get the care they need but can't afford.
