The Virginia Health Care Foundation is dedicated to helping

uninsured and underserved Virginians get the primary

medical care, dental services, mental health care,

children's health insurance and prescription medications they need.

Finding Insurance

For Children:  Virginia's FAMIS programs help children

receive insurance to cover medical dental and vision care

until their parents are able to re-enter the workforce.

Eligibility is based on a family's current monthly income

(a family of four earning $3,675/month might qualify).

Learn about free or low cost children's health insurance.

For the Newly Unemployed:

is available through the U.S. Department of Labor.

Getting Covered: Finding Health Insurance When You Lose Your Job, helps people who've lost their health coverage sort through options for new coverage. 

For Anyone:  A Guide to Finding Health Insurance in Virginia from CoverTheUninsured.org details health coverage options for uninsured Virginians.

For Expectant Mothers:FAMIS MOMS provides health insurance for low income, uninsured pregnant women.

Finding Medical, Dental, Mental Health or Vision Care and/or Prescription Medicine Help

For Children:  Virginia's FAMIS programs help children receive medical, dental and vision care until their parents are able to re-enter the workforce.  Learn more about FAMIS.

For Adults:  Virginia Community Health Centers and Free Clinics provide free or affordable health care to uninsured   Virginians in many communities across the Commonwealth.  Most also offer access to free or low cost prescription medications, and a growing number are providing dental care.

Prescription Medicines for people with chronic (long-term) diseases may be available at low or no cost to

uninsured Virginians through RxRelief Virginia and other medication assistance programs. There also are a growing number of drug discount cards and programs.

Mental Health resources are available through Virginia's Community Services Boards and other outlets.

Virginia Hospitals and health systems have financial assistance policies to assist low-income

patients. Hospitals provide care regardless of ability to pay.

Some Virginia Health Department locations provide adult health care services and dental care.

A growing number of other community providers are available to help uninsured Virginians get specialty medical care, dental or vision care and/or prescription medications.

Other Programs for the Uninsured

Patient Advocate Foundation’s Virginia Cares Uninsured Program can assist uninsured Virginians who have been diagnosed with chronic, debilitating, or life-threatening disease and are experiencing access to health care issues. 

Virginia's Department of Medical Assistance Services administers the Virginia Medicaid program and

provides information about other programs for uninsured Virginians, as well as those with disabilities, long-term illnesses and the elderly (see the Commonwealth of Virginia Roadmap to Services).  For a quick summary of Virginia Medicaid, review Medicaid at a Glance.  To learn more and see if you are eligible, visit the Virginia Department of Social Services Medicaid website.  

A growing number of other community providers are available to help uninsured Virginians get the care they need but can't afford.
