Grant Guidelines and How to Apply

Organizations that have met the Grant Eligibility requirements can apply for the Health Access grants using the following procedure. Project Connect, Medication Access, and Special Initiative grants are awarded only in response to periodic requests for proposals.

Virginia Health Care Foundation grants for Expanding Access to Primary Care are awarded in two cycles each year, in the spring and fall. Upcoming 2026 deadlines for funding consideration are:

Spring 2026

  • January 12, 2026: Letters of Intent due via email by 5 pm.
  • January 28, 2026: VHCF invites submission of full proposals based on Letter of Intent.
  • March 3, 2026: Formal proposals due to the VHCF office by 5 pm.
  • June 30, 2026: Grant awards announced by the Foundation Board.

Fall 2026

  • July 14, 2026: Letters of Intent due via VHCF’s online grant portal by 5 pm.
  • July 28, 2026: VHCF invites submission of full proposals based on Letters of Intent.
  • September 4, 2026: Formal proposals due to the VHCF office by 5 pm.
  • December 15, 2026: Grant awards announced by the Foundation Board.

Please do not submit a Letter of Intent without first carefully reviewing VHCF’s requirements to determine if your organization and project are eligible for consideration.

  1. Step One:  Determine if your organization and the project you’re proposing meet general eligibility requirements, and review the Health Access Grant Guidelines.
  2. Step Two:  If your organization and project meet the general eligibility requirements for a VHCF grant, you will need to submit a Letters of Intent via VHCF’s online grant portal.
  3. Step Three:  If VHCF invites your organization to develop your concept further, you will need to submit a formal proposal. (Note: please do not submit a formal proposal if your organization has not been invited to do so.)

If you have any questions regarding how to apply for a grant, please schedule a time to speak with a VHCF Program Officer here.
